The Johor Art Gallery is one of the attractions tourists concentrate on when visiting the Sultan Abu Bakar Heritage Complex. It is a location for carrying out artistic events such as exhibits, contests, workshops, seminars, and classes.

In addition, it serves as a stage for elevating the abilities of Johor painters to be promoted and recognised through the planning of regular programmes with an educational theme.

To date, more than 200 paintings, drawings, ceramic sculptures, and photography from various painters’ backgrounds have been placed in the Johor Art Gallery.

The Johor Art Gallery was built in 1910 and houses all historic and discovered item such as documents and cultural artifacts traditionally used by Malays particularly from the State of Johor.

Since its establishment in 1993, this gallery houses various art collections, artifacts and many items closely related to the Johor’s Malay heritage. Its exhibits are geared to clothings, weapons, currency, manuscripts and examples of calligraphy, ceramic objects and fine art.

YAB Menteri Besar Johor announced that the Johor Art Gallery would be the Arts and Cultural Centre for the State of Johor in 1999. With the many displays of traditional clothing, weapons, currency, manuscripts, fine works of art, beautiful calligraphy scrolls and ceramics, you will probably think this is a museum instead.

The main display area greets the visitor with beautiful works of art by various talented Johor-born artists. From paintings to sculptures and many other mediums of artworks are displayed here. The undeniable shared pride among the artists here is their apparent love for Johor’s rich, cultural heritage that is still very much alive today.

Favorite topics of interest include the kuda kepang, the ghazal, beautiful calligraphy pieces. Fishing scenes is also prevalent. Tranquil pictures of small fishing boats tied to poles along coastal areas, fisher-folks coming home from the sea with their daily bounties, and many other eye pleasing, soul soothing works of art.Restoration efforts were undertaken to create an art gallery worthy to be known as one of the best in Malaysia.
